Deaf Culture

Identity

accepting and recognizing one self as part of this community, participating and being proud of its culture and heritage.

Communication etiquette

is a must. You have to know about the importance of eye contact, how to communicate and get people’s attention properly. For example, when trying to call for someone, instead of shouting their name, try tapping on their shoulder or delicately turning the lights on and off.

Language

the use of Sign Language, which we have said before, and will continue to say it. It is important to know that Sign Languages have their own structural and grammatical composition and rules. They are not just a signed translated version of the country’s oral language

Community

A high level of networking and strong ties within the deaf community.

Traditions

stories from other deaf generations, shared experiences and participating in important events for the community.

Values

it is essential to preserve Sign Language literature, heritage and other forms of arts and legacies. Alongside that, clear communication is very much valued as well.

Let's Communicate

Let's Communicate is a platform that has been developed specifically for the deaf community. This project was inspired by the creation of the first sign language dictionary in 2016, an idea emerged that ultimately won the prestigious "Best Idea" award in the "Youth for Change Program" by the Bibliotheca of Alexandria. This groundbreaking concept aimed to create an online dictionary to raise awareness and educate deaf Moroccans in sign language while also offering a unique approach that would enable non-deaf individuals to learn sign language.

The idea was developed by members of the deaf community associated with Dar Al Maghreb Association, located in the small town of M'rirt, Morocco. This initiative lead into the development of an online dictionary designed to facilitate the educational process for the deaf in learning sign language. Simultaneously, this innovative tool also provided opportunities for non-deaf individuals to learn sign language
